Music and love is in the air in Topanga Canyon!

Max is so excited to revisit his favorite Shakespearean comedy Twelfth Night or What You Will in the role of Duke Orsino! Lost twins, mistaken identity, and unrequited love abounds in one of the most hysterical romps to ever come to stage. There is an added twist, as some of Shakespeare’s most iconic monologues appear in the form of song! It will be a musical, fun-filled spectacle for the whole family!

On a more somber note, Max will also appear in an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People. When news comes to light that a town’s resort spa water is contaminated, the citizens of rural South Fork, South Carolina must decide between the financial well-being and public health and safety. Max plays Horatio, a newspaper editor with an agenda. Politics, race, and economics clash as the town is forced to look at itself in a crucial era of American History.

This summer, Max is bringing history to the stage and defying empires at Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum!

Opening in June is William Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, rarely-produced epic tragedy depicting the fall of the flawed Ancient Roman general. Max will be playing Aufidius, the fierce general of the Volsce people who fights to defend his city against the rise of a young Roman nation. When Coriolanus’ disdain for the Roman commoners causes him to be banished from the Capital city, he and Aufidius form a shaky alliance with the intent to sack Rome. It is a story of war, arrogance, politics, and struggle between different groups from the riotous beginning to the final, killing blow.

In July, Max will be starring as the Cristophe in Haiti by William Dubois. In a show that has not been done in decades, the story is told of General Toussaint L’Ouveture and his comrades who fight to secure Haiti’s independence from French rule. In this swashbuckling take on the Haitian Revolution, men and women on both sides of the conflict will discover how far a nation will go to claim their freedom.

Max’s quest to appear in all of William Shakespeare’s plays continues as he joins Chase What Flies Theatre Company in a production of the rarely-performed Richard II! When a leader’s disregard for his duties threatens to throw the land into chaos, his subjects are forced to choose sides. What unfolds is a clash between an inept king’s Divine Right to govern England and young duke’s wish to restore it. It is history in the making and poetry at its finest, as Shakespeare explores the themes of power, honor, and identity. Max plays Sir Exton, a nobleman whose love of country pushes him to the ultimate act. For more information, visit the Chase What Flies Fan Page!

June – October 2017
This summer at Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum we are making our voices heard! Join us for our “Rising Up” repertory season as we use our art to spark discussions about racial bias, religious discrimination, the national split in political opinion, and the face of a dystopian society.

Max will open the 2017 Theatricum season with The Merchant of Venice as The Prince of Morocco, a braggadocios, hot-blooded suitor of the leading lady, Portia. During the Renaissance Period, people of the Jewish faith were a political and cultural outcasts all over Europe. After years of cruel treatment from his Christian counterparts, Shylock finds himself controlling the fate of one of Venice’s best-loved moneylenders. In one of his most controversial plays, Shakespeare gives a voice to the most vulnerable people in society and explores the nature of humanity and the execution (or lack of) of social justice.

Opening in mid-June is Animal Farm, adapted from the classic cautionary tale by George Orwell, and Max is thrilled to take on the role of Boxer, the powerful carthorse. The animals of Manor Farm have endured enough of the harsh conditions and bitter laboring. Led by the pigs, the cleverest animals on the farm, the beasts band together to overthrow their human overlords and work according to their own terms. But before long, alliances begin to shift, promises are broken, and the pigs oversee a regime that looks all-too-similar to the life the animals thought they left behind.

Finally, Max will be performing the role of the young naive actor John Nevins in Trouble In Mind. The theatre has always been the place for difficult conversations about society to take place. But for a cast of black and white artists in the 1950s, conflicting opinions begin to rise regarding the sensitive nature of the story that they are telling. As they creative process goes on, each of the performers must choose where their loyalties lie; with the story they’ve been hired to tell or with the painful  history that it represents.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream returned to the mainstage. Max, who for several years played the love-smitten Lysander, donned new sandals and took on the part of Duke Theseus. The charm of the outdoor space was as strong as it has ever been, and the wacky lovers, good-natured mechanicals, and feuding fairies chased each other around the woods of Athens to the delight of all!

-Max also played the role of the young lover, Cleante in Imaginary Invalid. In Theatricum’s version, “Madame Argan,” a chronic hypochondriac with a pile of medical bills, will go to any length to marry her daughter off to a doctor. Of course, her daughter has other ideas. This narcotic cocktail of romantic triangles, double entendres and mistaken identities will leave you in stitches, proving yet again that laughter is the best medicine.
